A strut is a thin beam: far lighter than hull, and far more fragile. It is for reaching, not for taking hits.
Use struts to hold a weapon or a thruster out at a distance without the weight of hull, or to bridge one part of a ship to another. A strut that is shot away takes everything beyond it with it, so keep them out of the line of fire.
