Armor is the toughest block there is, and a little heavier than hull for it. It is a triangle, and connects only along its straight sides, so it sits on the outside of a ship as a sloped plate rather than in the middle of it.
Put armor where the hits land: over the core, ahead of the thrusters, along the flank you show to an enemy.
